schools guide

It's been an eventful 12 months in the world of independent education. With an increasing number of schools planning to join the state sector as academies and with debate raging about GCSE and A-level grading, there's plenty for headmasters and headmistresses to ponder as the new academic year gathers pace.
Fees, too, have been high on the agenda - and high on the list of parents' worries. Which is why it's so important to get it right or, more to the point, so absolutely crucial not to get it wrong by choosing a school unsuited to the needs and character of your particular boy or girl.
Research has confirmed that the school a child attends at the age of 11 has a profound impact on what one report calls 'life chances' after that pupil leaves university. And it's with this in mind that we have compiled the Tatler's School Guide 2008. This year - generously supported by Selfridges - the guide has expanded and now comprises 200 schools spread across the whole country.
All are exceptional in their own way. So as you shop around - which you absolutely must do - I hope the guide will be a vital resource
for what is one of the most important decisions any parent can make.
